The Ratties

As well as mice, here at Zen we have ratties! We don't breed the rats (though one day in the far distant future it might be on the cards), but love them just as much as those we do.

This is my boy Toby (b. 1/7/04). He was my first rattie, he was the one that started my love of these wonderful creatures. He was the runt of his litter when I bought him from a local pet shop at only four and a half weeks old! I've fed him up, though, and now he's the cheekiest, cutest and most loyal animal anyone could ask for. He has had a long stint at being the alpha in the cage, and bullied Oscar quite badly - not injuries, just bullying. But things have calmed down a bit since his torpedoes have been removed ;)

This is Oscar (b. 1/7/04). I bought him from the same place I got Toby, about a week later when I realised that ratties needed friends. I suspect they are brothers, though Oscar is a bit bulkier (but shorter in the body) than Toby. He's the kind of rat that is permanently excited. He boggles and huffs and foofs at anything that moves, and likes to see what's going on - without necessarily being the centre of attention. He's not big on cuddles, but is always there with his nose in your face, wanting to know what's going on. He's a good boy :)

Bamf (b. 24/8/05) is named after the sound that the X-Men's Nightcrawler makes when he teleports. He was thus named because he's sorta blue coloured (mink) and because the day I got him, he, er, teleported from my hands to the floor. Oops! Bamf is a gorgeous, floppy, hilarious boy. He'll let you do anything to him if it means getting some attention - he's a real people-rat. He's also my only rat that loves to wrestle with my hand, and it's so much fun to get him all riled up. He's a bit of a loner when it comes to other rats, but he just likes his space - and is never rude about it.

Taro (b. 20/11/05) was only 3 weeks old when he came to live with us, and it was a lucky thing he did, because shortly afterwards, the rest of his litter died in the heat. For the first few weeks he just slept in my hand, but now he's turning into the gorgeous little terror he'll grow into. He loves other ratties, loves food, is a happy-go-lucky, easy-going sort of rattie. He's incredibly soft and squishy, and just like any other kid, loves his playtime. He's a bit bigger than he was in this photo now, but I just couldn't pass it up!

Sinister (b. 11/03/06), or Sin for short, has lived up to his name. He is the most recent addition to our little ratty family, and wishes he was the biggest toughest rat there ever was. He's still a little shy compared to the rest of our squishy gang, but loves being the centre of attention and is always hanging off the door of the cage when I come into the room.
